New Racers

So You Want to be a Racer?

Going from a street rider or track day enthusiast to a competitive racer is a rewarding challenge. At UtahSBK, we provide a professional environment where you can test your limits safely. Racing is about more than speed; it’s about discipline, consistency, and joining a community that supports your progression.

Have A Plan

Success on the track starts in the garage. Determine which series fits your goals—Superbike, Supermoto, or MiniMoto—and evaluate your budget for gear, bike prep, and fees. Setting realistic milestones, such as completing a specific number of track days or a StreetGP session, will help ensure a smooth transition into competitive racing.

Read the Rulebook

The UtahSBK Rulebook is your primary resource for safety and competition standards. It details everything from bike requirements (like safety wiring and coolant) to on-track procedures and flag meanings. Understanding these regulations is mandatory for passing technical inspection and ensuring the safety of yourself and your fellow racers.

Preparation

Proper preparation is the difference between a great weekend and a frustrating one. Ensure your protective gear; helmet, suit, gloves, and boots meets UtahSBK safety specifications. Your motorcycle must be in top mechanical condition, with fresh tires, strong brakes, and no leaks.

Get Your License

To compete in our championship series, you must obtain a UtahSBK Racing License. This requires the successful completion of our New Racer Certification (NRC) course or at least 2 StreetGPs + Approval from the Director of Schools. This intensive program ensures you understand track protocols, racing lines, and safety procedures. Once you graduate, you are eligible to purchase your Novice license.

Registration

All UtahSBK event registrations, licensing, and memberships are handled through MotorSportsReg (MSR). Create a profile, add your vehicle details, and select the events you wish to enter. We recommend registering early to secure your spot and take advantage of any early-bird incentives.

Race Day

When you arrive at the track, your first steps are Technical Inspection and Registration check-in. Following these, you will attend a mandatory Riders Meeting where the Race Director outlines the day’s procedures. Between sessions, the paddock is a place for camaraderie, don’t hesitate to ask veteran racers or board members for advice.

Street GP

StreetGP is an entry level race program that allows street riders to experience a race weekend for less cost and with less bike prep. This allows you to dip your toes and decide if racing is for you before a bigger financial commitment. You get classroom instruction, practice time, and a simulated race. Completing multiple StreetGPs can be a path to full race licensure.

Track Days

We strongly encourage new racers to spend time at track days to build muscle memory and familiarity with the Utah Motorsports Campus layout. Working with our partner, APEXTrackdays, allows you to maximize your seat time and refine your technique in a non-competitive setting, making your eventual move to racing much more successful.

New Racer Certification

Our New Racer Certification (NRC) program, in partnership with Utah Motorcycle Law, provides essential knowledge and skills for new racers. The program includes classroom instruction on track familiarization, safety procedures, and race protocols. Practical track sessions, including sighting laps, practice starts, and a mock race, are also included. Upon completion, you will be eligible to obtain a racing license.
